Sunday while traveling back from visiting my in-laws, Kari and I began talking about what it truly means to be a Christian. Is it the type of church we go to? Is it they style of worship? Or is it falling on the ground, doing carpet time?
The American church has been so divided on what being a true follower of Christ is. We’re to worship this way, or that way. You’re to speak in tongues, or if you don’t you’re not saved. But what does it mean and what are we to preach as believers.
Growing up with my parents in the ministry, I’ve seen all styles of church. And one thing that I’ve learned is there is no one way to worship God. Each denomination has their own style. How you choose to worship is dependent upon how you were raised, what church you first attended or what you’re most comfortable.
There is one message that remains true. One message that so many have simply forgotten about. That message is the cross.
How is it that so many churches and believers forget that one simple message of redemption? I believe it’s motivated by selfishness.
Paul said, For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified” (1 Cor. 2:2).
Paul was speaking to a church who placed supernatural experiences above the simple doctrine of redemption through Christ Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection. The Corinthian church wanted to see more and more miracles. But didn’t Jesus say, A wicked and perverse generation seeks signs (Matthew 16:4)?
I’m not saying signs and wonders are bad. I believe they have a purpose. However, I believe that if we are seeking after them, we are missing the whole point of what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ. Our number one priority as believers is to proclaim the power of the risen Lord.
I’ve seen God move in powerful ways. I’ve seen tumors healed. I’ve seen clubbed feet turned straight. I’ve seen demons flee. But one thing that trumps them all. One thing that moves me to tears is when I see someone bow their knee to the Lord.
To see someone come to faith in Jesus, for the first time makes me weep.
This is what it’s all about. To see people come to faith in Jesus.
If we miss this one most important doctrine in everything that we teach as pastors and leaders, we’re missing the whole point. Church is not designed for the believer, church is designed as a safe place for the sinner to repent.
Our goal should be to see people become righteous and begin to live a life of sanctification. Redemption is the most beautiful gift God has given us. This is why Paul says he doesn’t want to hear anything else. Nothing matters but this one thing.
Church is not designed for the believer, church is designed as a safe place for the sinner to repent.

As we come out of our Easter services, let’s not make it a once a year thing to speak of the resurrection of Christ. Make it a weekly effort in your churches and ministries. Speak of the mysteries of God and the power that comes from the cross of Christ.
This is our greatest weapon. This is the one thing we can use. This is the only message that will bring someone to repentance
For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified” (1 Cor. 2:2).
